Statistical Internet QoS Guarantees for IP Telephony


In this paper, we propose and analyze a network architecture for providing QoS statistical guarantees over an internet domain. The architecture is based on the Differentiated Services model, and makes use of the so-called QoS routing and MPLS forwarding to enhance the support of IP Telephony. Our proposed routing scheme is based on QoS intradomain OSPF routing, an extension of the conventional OSPF routing protocol. Processing O/H is shifted from core to edge routers, which compute routes, monitor QoS path quality and enforce Call Acceptance Control (CAC) using the link state information advertised by OSPF. Packet forwarding makes use of the MPLS approach in order to make packet delivery fast and packet overhead small.
