Biography

Seongwon Han is currently working toward the PhD degree in the Network Research Lab at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) under the guidance of Dr. Mario Gerla. He received the B.S. degree in computer science from Ajou University in 2006 and M.S. degree in computer science from UCLA in 2009. His primary research interests are Media Access Control (MAC), routing protocols and localization in underwater sensor networks.

Ocean-TUNE : A Community Ocean Testbed for Underwater Wireless Networks

This project involves nine researchers from four institutions, University of Connecticut (UCONN), University of Washington (UW), University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and Texas A&M University (TAMU). A variety of expertise on acoustics, communication, networking, engineering, and oceanography is unified to develop a community Ocean Testbed for Underwater Networks Experiments (Ocean-TUNE).

The Ocean-TUNE is an open testbed “suite”, accessible to the public. It consists four testbeds to be deployed at four different sites, namely, Long Island Sound (CT), Hood Canal (WA), Santa Monica Bay (CA), and Galveston Bay (TX), which have a diverse coverage of the US coast in terms of geography and weather.

With each testbed deployed for 6 months, Ocean-TUNE could provide 24/7 ubiquitous access to two testbeds, where a good web-based user scheduler will be developed. Further, all testbeds are different in size and configuration, with flexible choices of surface nodes, bottom nodes, and mobile nodes (gliders and drifters). The network nodes in each testbed are all equipped with high-speed orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) acoustic modems, which could provide high data rates and strong networking support. All layers of the networking protocol stack can be easily configured. Furthermore, three testbeds (UCONN, UW, and TAMU) also include two reconfigurable modems with multi-input multi-output (MIMO) capabilities, allowing tests of various acoustic communication strategies from the users. In addition to radio control of the surface nodes, an acoustic remote control will be developed to configure all underwater nodes.
